Crop & Region Search

Search a deliberately selected region when the whole image contains too much noise or multiple subjects.

Definition & Core Concept

Crop search turns a selected subsection of an image into a new query. It is one of the simplest and most effective ways to remove background noise and focus a visual retrieval system on the distinctive element.

A practical search tactic

Cropping is valuable even without sophisticated object detection. A user can isolate a logo, face, product, artwork or architectural detail before running reverse or similarity search.

Forensic value

If a reused image has been heavily cropped, searching the full modified image may fail. Searching a surviving distinctive region can sometimes reconnect it to earlier versions.

Trade-offs

Cropping too tightly can remove useful context. The best crop retains enough distinctive structure while excluding unrelated visual elements.
