Image metadata search uses information attached to or surrounding an image rather than visual appearance alone. Some metadata travels inside the file; other metadata exists on the webpage or content-management system that publishes it.
Embedded metadata
EXIF may contain camera information, timestamps or GPS coordinates. IPTC/XMP fields can contain creator, rights and descriptive metadata. Many platforms strip some or all of these fields during processing.
Web context
Search engines can also use filenames, alt text, captions, headings and surrounding copy to understand an image. Context is especially important when the visual content itself is ambiguous.
Metadata is evidence, not proof
Metadata can be edited or removed. For verification work it should be treated as one clue among visual matching, publication history and source credibility.
