Visual search is a broad category in which the visual content of an image becomes part of the query. It may combine object recognition, OCR, similarity retrieval, language models and search-index context.
A broader category than reverse search
Reverse image search is one possible visual-search workflow. Modern visual search can identify a plant, isolate a lamp inside a room, read text from a sign, discover similar products, or connect visible objects to knowledge and commerce results.
Multimodal queries
Modern systems can combine an image with words. A user can select an object and ask a question about color, material, model, location or use. This turns visual search from a pure matching problem into a multimodal retrieval problem.
When visual search wins
It is especially useful when users do not know the correct vocabulary. A picture can express shape, texture, composition and context more efficiently than a written description.
